The name translates as “golden wood” and was inspired by his partly aristocratic family heritage as well as his travels. Béziat was originally a lawyer before turning to jewellery design in the early 1990s. His signature approach combines exotic woods (ebony being particularly characteristic) with pre- cious and semi-precious gemstones set in 18-carat gold. Coloured stones — tourmalines, topazes, amethysts, emeralds — are frequently used, often cabochon-cut, with a strong nature-inspired aes- thetic. His style is described as combining Art Nouveau and Art Déco influences. He counts some of the world’s most prestigious collectors among his clients, including the Sultan of Oman. More recently he partnered with Velaa Private Island in the Maldives to create two exclusive jewellery collections inspired by the resort’s natural surroundings. The maison is relatively niche and not widely documented in major auction house literature, but has a devoted following in the vintage and estate jewellery market. Pieces are signed ‘L’ORÉE DU BOIS Made in France’.
