Born in Berlin in 1931, Rudolf Hetzel trained in fine metalwork and design before establishing himself as one of Europe’s most innovative jewellery artists. In 1966, he moved to Kilkenny, Ireland, at the invitation of the Irish Export Board, where he founded a family-run workshop and helped shape the country’s modern jewellery movement. Blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design technol- ogy, Hetzel’s six-decade career produced sculptural yet wearable pieces that fuse precious metals and gemstones in instantly recognisable forms. Alongside his artistic practice, he has been a dedicated mentor, creating training opportunities that pre- serve and evolve Ireland’s rich jewellery-making tradition.
