Its design draws on the architecture of ancient Roman temples, with a barrel fashioned from fine marble and a skeletonised cap in solid 750 gold. The cap is engraved with the opening line of Horace’s ode to Maecenas, while the gold cap ring bears his name. The cone is finished with a reproduction of an ancient Roman coin portraying Maecenas, and the clip takes the form of a Roman gladius.
