9 Doreen Kilfeather is a Dublin-based photographer specialising in portraiture and fashion photography. A deep understanding of light and shadow, and a sense of intimacy and connection define her work.There is an honesty to her images, which possess a believable sense of being. Her per- sonal projects focus on her family and friends and their chil- dren. She returns to these communities of friends each year to document the feeling of being a child, an adolescent, a young adult, in portraits that capture both the person and a sense of the place they occupy. Her fashion editorials have been featured in well-known Irish and international publications such as Irish Tatler, Im- age, Cara,The Gloss, Boys by Girls and Faire magazine. Her thoughtful and organic approach to image-making has led to commissions with Irish designers and brands who relate to the personal and intimate nature of her work – including The Tweed Project, Superfolk, Jennifer Slattery Textiles, Colin Burke among others. Initially her skills were learned in the darkroom at the Gal- lery of Photography, she went on to build on that knowl- edge by attending workshops internationally - from Lon- don to Santa Fe, JoshuaTree and Los Angeles. Last year she ventured into the teaching arena herself, joining Cliodhna Prendergast, Katie Sanderson and Ruth Kennedy Forsyth at Cliodhna Prendergast's photography retreats entitled ‘Workship’ in Roundstone, Connemara. Followed by a further week-long creative retreat in Provence mentoring photographers and other creatives with a focus on storytell- ing through photography. Her latest work - Buí - an exhibition in collaboration with stylist and good friend Aisling Farinella, launches at the Sarah Walker Gallery in West Cork, in June of this year. Featuring work made with her daughter Elsa Murray and fashion by Simone Rocha, the images were shot on location at Bothar Buí,West Cork. Themes of retreat, domesticity, women and nature are woven through the images which were created in winter and summer seasons 2020/21.
