Both skilled craftsmen, their venture was immediately successful and by 1958 they had already set up a second work- shop in New York. In the early stage of the ateliers’ career, Georland attracted the commissions of many fine jewellery maisons, most notably those at the Place Vendôme in Paris, such as Cartier, Bouche- ron, and Van Cleef & Arpels. During the 1960s and 70s, the company expanded into Europe with commissions from Geneva and the UK for rings, necklac- es, and entire sets of jewellery. The workshop’s attention to detail, and especially their ability to set gems beautifully such as in Lots (43068-5) and (43068-28), was evident from the beginning and allowed them to make connections with cus- tomers such as Queen Sophie of Spain, Queen Elizabeth II, and Princess Lady Diana who owned a platinum, sapphire and diamond necklace by Georland. Over time, Georland’s reputation expanded to the Middle and Far East and many exceptional pieces were created in the workshop, which became owned by Henry Marteau. The tal- ent held in the atelier meant commissions were received not only for jewellery but also object d’art and even gem-set chan- deliers. Henry's sons Stéphane and Jean-Gabriel joined the company in the 1990’s, bringing with them the vibrancy and drive to propel the business into the future. A renewed focus on sourcing the finest materials and increasing the use of new technology allowed the House to double their client numbers in less than ten years. As Georland went into liquidation in 2013 and no longer create pieces under their own brand, piec- es available at auction are a rare and prized find.
