Her father, Constantino was Bulgari’s eldest son and held a central role in the family firm.As a youngwoman though,Marina had other interests, amongst themaspirations of becoming a mathematician as well as a keen interest in sailing. It was inevitable that she would succumb to pressures to join the family firm and, by 1973, she had become co-CEOwith her cousin Gianni. Fuelled by an entrepreneurial spirit and an independent mind, Marina eventually left Bulgari in 1976 and struck out on her own. In 1978, she foundedMarina B.For the next number of years, she travelled extensively and eventually opened stores inGeneva,London,Milan,Monte Carlo, Paris and NewYork. Creative Director and Chairman of Marina B today, Guy Bedarida describes her as a woman designing for women. She was hugely successful in the venture and has been highly acclaimed for her easy-to-wear structured and architectural designs in unusual colour tones and clever compositions. In the case of this Cardan necklace from the late 1980s, instead of stringing or threading the gemstones,Marina took inspiration from the joints of a gimbal compass used on her yacht so that the rounded link or joint wraps around the gemstone in an alternating pattern.Variations of this method and the very distinctive look it created were used in other collections such as the Pneu earrings and the Fusilli parure of the early 90s. Marina retired to Monte Carlo in the late 1990s and sold her firm.Today it is run by Guy Bedarida who has rejuvenated the brand while main- taining its original spirit and image. 164 A DIAMOND LINE BRACELET The continuous row of brilliant-cut diamonds within square links, mounted in 18K gold, diamonds approximately 1.80ct total, English hall- marks, length 18.1cm € 800 - 1,200 165 A DIAMOND ‘ETINCELLE DE CARTIER’ RING, BY CARTIER Of bombé design pavé-set to the front with brilliant-cut dia- monds, mounted in 18K gold, signed Cartier, numbered, ring size M½ (54) € 3,000 - 4,000 166 A DIAMOND RING Composed of three hoops, the frontispiece set with brilliant-cut di- amonds, mounted in 18K white and yellow gold, diamond approximately 1.50ct total,English hallmarks, maker’s mark ‘8E’, ring size N € 800 - 1,000 167 A DIAMOND SINGLE-STONE RING The collet-set brilliant-cut diamond weighing 0.54ct between polished gold shoulders, mounted in platinum, ring size I € 800 - 1,200 Accompanied by McDowell Jewellers invoice dated March 30th 1999 & an updated valuation from McDowell dated December 2011 168 A COLOURED DIAMOND AND DIAMOND DRESS RING Composed of central marquise-shaped diamond of brown tint weighing approximately 0.50ct, within a surround of baguette and mar- quise-cut diamonds, mounted in 14K gold, remaining diamonds approximately 1.40ct total, ring size N½ € 1,800 - 2,200
