Of the spectrum, blue is the rarest, with paraiba tourmalines being well known for their high value and collectabil- ity. While the paraiba tourmaline gets its colour from the presence of copper, the indicolite tourmaline, is another rare variety of blue tourmaline which is coloured by iron. It is strongly pleochroic (i.e. will show different intensities of colour when viewing from dif- ferent angles) and generally varies from a light to a deep blue. The name indicolite is derived from indigolite, a nod to the intense indigo colour of the stone, although these tourmalines can also sometimes be of a greenish hue.
