It was collab- orative project between two friends and great technological minds, Louis Cartier (1875-1942), the French watchmaker, and Alberto Santos-Dumont (1873-1932), the Brazilian aviation pioneer. In 1901 Santos-Dumont expressed the imprac- ticality of checking the time on his pocket watch while flying. Cartier dutifully responded and began inventing the first purpose-designed modern wristwatch. Featuring geometric shapes and exposed screws, the Santos de Cartier watch revolutionised watchmaking and remains a classic model to this day.
