64 Bidding ends 10am Monday 10 th August 186 ILLUMINATED LEAF ON VELLUM FROM A FRENCH BOOK OF HOURS, ‘The Hours of theVirgin’ c.1485 10.5 x 15.2cm Written in Latin in brown ink in a gothic style, large initials in blue and red with white on a ground of burnished gold, foliate border painted in blue, red, yellow, brown and green. Framed & glazed. € 250 - 300 187 HARRY CLARKE (1889-1931) Original pencilled design for a single light stained glass window In nine panels, hard and soft pencils on cream paper, 29.5 x 7cm The panels with inked outlines, mounted, showing the bearded figure of the adult Christ holding a staff, standing below a circular vignette showing figures attending an old man in bed, over a matching vignette showing the Virgin and Child on a donkey, flanked by angels with long hair, their gowns with Celtic ornamentation, the entire composition headed by an angel with long hair and crossed hands, over ranks of faces in profile looking in from left and right, hatched in freehand and elaborately orna- mented throughout in the style of Harry Clarke. The vignette showing the Virgin on donkey is reminiscent of Clarke’s illustration to Chesterton’s ‘The Donkey’ in The Year’s At The Spring. An attractive design, apparently executed freehand except for the circular forms, the composition full of the minute detail characteristic of Clarke. Taken as a whole, the design does not appear to match any of Clarke’s published windows. It may be a sketch for an uncompleted project € 800 - 1,200
