133 Works on Paper 370A BUNREACHT NA HÉIREANN. The Constitution of Ireland. Dublin, 1945. v, [2], 4-214, [2] pp. Green cloth. Signed by Seán T. Ó Ceallaigh on front endpaper. Edition limited to 700 copies printed in March 1945 by Cahill & Co. Fine. The Irish Constitution, which was published on 1 May 1937, met with a hostile reaction from the British press, but did not unduly disturb their government. It was approved by the Dail on 14 June and submitted to the people of Ireland in a referendum held on 1 July, the same day as the gener- al election. The result was a massive majority for both the referendum and Fianna Fail. Sean T. Ó Ceallaigh, second President of Ireland, joined the Gaelic League in 1898 and was active in the IRB and a founder member of Sinn Fein. He was manager of the Gaelic League newspaper ‘An Claidheamh Soluis’, and in 1916 was Staff Captain to Pearse in the GPO. He was arrested and interned, but escaped court-martial; in 1919 he became Ceann Comhairle of the First Dail, and later a Republican envoy in Paris. A close associate of Eamon de Valera, he was Minister for Lo- cal Government and for Finance in successive Fianna Fail governments, and succeeded Douglas Hyde as President of Ireland in 1945, re-elected in 1952. He died in Dublin about two years after the date of this letter. € 200 - 300 370B DÁIL EIREANN Buan-Orduithe. Standing Orders. 1926. Im. I.Gnó Puibí Vol. I. Public Business, 1923.
