With historical commentary by G.A. Hayes-McCoy. Dublin, 1964. Folio. xv, 36, 23 (maps) pp. Cloth. Sc arce. This collection of Irish maps include twelve which were made in 1602 by Richard Barthelet (Bartlett), a cartographer who apparently accompanied the Viceroy, Lord Mountjoy, in the last campaigns of Hugh O’Neill’s war. They show the country between Dundalk and Newry, the valley of the Ulster Blackwater, and other areas in South Ulster, together with detailed pictures of Armagh, Dungannon, Charlemont, Monaghan, Tullahogue and other sites. The originals of these maps were presented to the National Li- brary of Ireland by Dr. J. Bowlby of London. They are outstanding specimens of cartography and this col- lection has made possible the identification of other Barthelet maps. There are also maps of Cork, Wa- terford, and Kinsale Harbours, the Fort at Waterford, Dublin Castle, and an area in the Outer Hebrides. These maps are of great value to the students of social and military history. Good set in rare dust jackets. € 150 - 250
