105 Works on Paper 287 CAPE TOWN ALBUM OF PHOTOGRAPHS Cape Town, South Africa circa 1870-1880s Large folio album. Half morocco. Spine worn. Photographs, various sizes, all in good condition. The album was the property of Mr. Alf Walsh of Dublin who inherited it from his father. The family lived in Cape Town towards the end of the 19th century when the pictures were taken. When Alf was 12 years old, the family moved back to Ireland. The photographs depict Cape Town in the latter quarter of the 19th century. The contrast is remarkable: In the panoramic view from Signal Hill there was plenty of trees and open land whereas today it is a crowded concrete jungle; Fish Hoek Beach was then a desolate windswept beach overlooked by two lonely homesteads, in comparison with today where houses are creeping higher and higher up the mountain slopes; The Parade with horses and carriages is in great contrast with the hustle and bustle of the Parade today - packed with cars and filled with the cries of vendors selling their wares; The Grand Parade likewise is unrecognisable compared to the time when the crowd was watching a Military Parade, etc. Photographs included are: Large oblong panoramic view of Cape Town [110.5 x 19cm]; Part of Cape Town; Surveyor 2nd Royal Engineers, Cape Town (with people at door); House of Assembly; Interior House of Assembly; Old Surveyors 2nd.
