102 62 PETER CURLING (B.1955) Morning Exercises Oil on canvas, 89 x 178cm (34¾ x 70’’) Signed € 20,000 - 30,000 Born in Waterford, Peter Curling developed an early affinity for horses, nurtured in part by his mother’s involvement in the sale of sporting art. This formative exposure intro- duced him not only to the subject matter that would come to define his career but also to the visual traditions of equestrian painting. His aptitude for depicting horses emerged at a young age and was quickly recognised; by the age of fourteen, while living in England, he had already achieved notable success with a sold-out exhibition at Lambourn. Curling’s formal education included studies at Stonyhurst, followed by a scholarship to Millfield. He subsequently pursued artistic training in Florence, where from 1971 to 1974 he studied under the renowned Signorina Simi. This period proved pivotal in refining his technical abilities and deepening his understanding of classical draughtsmanship. In particular, it enabled him to develop a precise and sensitive approach to equine anatomy, combined with a distinctive capaci- ty to convey movement and vitality.
