38 24 *WALTER OSBORNE RHA (1859 - 1903) Sketch at Foxrock, ‘Wind’ (1892) Oil on board, 14 x 22.5cm (5½ x 8¾’’) With label verso signed and inscribed with title and dated; and with inscription ‘To Miss Dora Knox a souvenir, Nov. 1892 from Walter Osborne’ Provenance: Gifted directly by the artist to Miss Dora Knox; thence by descent Dora Knox was a cousin of the artist Dermod O’Brien PPRHA. Both he and Osborne studied in Royal Academy in Antwerp in the 1880s after which O’Brien left for Paris and Osborne moved to Brittany. € 8,000 - 12,000 This small picture is one of the most free, vigoursly-painted landscapes by Walter Osborne, rapidly executed on a small wooden panel in the open air - most likely in one sitting. Osborne depicts a pasture with cows, a wind-blown tree, perhaps a lake, and a wooded headland, under a sky full of clouds. The vigourous movements and textures of the brushstrokes swirling across the panel indicates Osborne’s process of painting, as he tries to capture the fleeting nature of the scene, where the clouds speed across the sky and the light changes on a gusty day. He con- veys well the delicate pink light of the clouds. The scene is set in Foxrock, a village in open countryside a few miles south of Dublin, and easily accessible by train from Harcourt Street station. Osborne may have been introduced to the area by his friend and fellow-painter J.B.S. MacIlwain, who lived at Stamford House, Foxrock. Osborne presented the picture as a gift to a friend, Miss Knox.
