16 4 PATRICK HENNESSY RHA (1915-1980) Mountain Pool Oil on canvas 63 x 89cm (24 ¾ x 35”) Signed Inscribed with artist’s oeuvre number ‘PH511’ verso Provenance: With David Hendriks Gallery, Dublin, July 1975, label verso; Collection of Mr & Mrs W. Cusack; thence by descent. € 8,000 - 12,000 A painter celebrated for his masterful realism and clarity of vision, Patrick Hennessy’s oeuvre is distinguished by a precision that belies the underly- ing poetry of his subject matter. Painted c.1975 and purchased from the David Hendriks Gallery in Dublin, Mountain Pool is a striking example of the artist’s late landscapes, in which he often turned his attention to the elemental beauty of the Irish countryside. The present work shows two Connemara ponies, a grey and a chestnut, pausing by the still waters of a mountain pool, still reflections in the fore- ground, with a blaze of gorse and the rugged West of Ireland landscape stretching beyond. Hennessy’s precise technique captures the clarity of light and texture of place, while the quiet presence of the ponies lends the scene with a sense of timelessness. An evocative work from the artist’s mature period, Mountain Pool ex- emplifies Hennessy’s ability to transform the everyday into images of enduring resonance.
