152 I R I SH OLD MAST ERS Auction Tuesday 5 November 2024 CHARLES JERVAS (C. 1675-1739) Thomas Carter (c. 1682-1763) and his wife Mary, née Claxton Thomas Carter, Member of Parliament and Master of the Rolls, was married to Mary, née Claxton, the first cousin of Edward Lovett Pearce, the great architect of Dublin’s Par- liament House and Bellamont Forest, the Palladian gem in County Cavan. The townhouse that Pearce designed for the couple, 9 Henrietta Street, has been described as ‘perhaps the most palatial residence’ on the famous street with one of the most impressive stair halls in Dublin.
