His father, originally from West Cork, farmed and schooled horses at Newcastle, Co Wicklow. Due to economic pressures the young Richard was taken out of school and put to work on the farm, an occupation which did not appeal to him. His interest in painting developed as a side-line and after educating himself he attended the School of Engineering at Trinity College, a degree course he never completed. Effectively self-taught, and after years of various jobs including teaching and working as a graphic designer, he became a full time artist in the mid ‘60s. He exhibited with the IELA along with Patrick Col- lins, Gerard Dillon and Patrick Scott and was also a regular exhibitor at the Royal Hibernian Academy, being elected a member in 1980. Kingston showed regularly in Dublin and London and represented Ireland at international exhibitions, including the Guggenheim International Award Exhibition. He died in 2003 in Dublin.
