Clare mother. He was brought up in Portstewart, on the north Derry coast and educated at Clongowes Wood College, Queen’s College, Oxford, and the University of Iowa. He worked as a teacher at his alma mater, Clongowes, and at Sandy- mount High School but also in Germany, Spain and the United States. A prolific poet he also wrote twelve plays, including How to Roast a Stras- bourg Goose published in 1985. That same year he was listed by The Irish Times as one of the 100 key names in Irish literature. He died from cancer in 2008.
