www.adams.ie Important Irish Art | 30 th March 2022 65 43 WILLIAM CRAMPTON GORE RHA (1871-1946) In a Greenhouse Oil on board, 38 x 46cm (15 x 18’’) Signed and dated 1909 € 4,000 - 6,000 Born in October 1871 Crampton Gore’s family home was in Enniskillen, Co. Fermanagh. Gore studied medicine and graduated from Trinity College, Dublin in 1897, practicing as a doctor until 1901 when he gave it all up for painting. He studied part-time at the Slade under Henry Tonks from 1898, enrolling full time in 1900 and spent the next five years studying as well as taking lessons in Paris. During his student days he was friendly with William Orpen and they shared a studio together at 21 Fitzroy Street. Orpen included Gore as the figure of the doctor in his well-known picture A Mere Fracture (1901) which was set in Fitzroy Street. Crampton Gore kept up his connections with Ireland and he exhibited at The Royal Hibernian Academy from 1905 and from then until 1939 he contributed more than one hundred works. From the titles ex- hibited over the years Achill Interior (1914), The Great Beeches at Wingfield (1925), Killiney Bay (1926), A Cottage Interior in Donegal (1931) Gore obviously made many painting trips back to Ireland. On his marriage in France in 1923, he settled in Montreuil-Sur-Mer in the South of France. He was related to Dermod O’Brien PRHA who stayed and painted with him on many occasions.
