50 41 WILLIAM CONOR RHA RUA ROI (1881-1968) Seán Kavanagh Charcoal and pastel on paper, 38 x 32cm (15 x 12½’’) Signed Seán Óg Ó Caomhánaigh (1885-1946) also known as Seán Kavanagh was an Irish scholar, from Dunquin, Co. Kerry. He was a brother to the legendary Muiris ‘Kruger’ Kavanagh (1894-1971). Kruger was Eamon de Valera’s personal bodyguard in America in the 1920s. On his return to Ireland he established his famous pub, Kruger’s, in Dunquin which still operates today. Sean in his early years also went to the United States, where he devoted most of his time to work in national movements, and to organising financial assistance for the struggle at home. He returned in time for the Civil War, in which he took an active part on the side of the Republicans and was commander of the Dingle area. He was captured in Lispole and sentenced to imprisonment at The Curragh.
