134 129 WILLIAM CUMING PRHA (1769-1852) Portrait of William Woodburn (1735- 1818) Oil on canvas, 75.5 x 63cm (29.75 x 24.75”) William Cuming was born in 1769 and studied at the Dublin Society’s Schools, becoming President of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1811 and remaining so until 1832, preceding fellow portrait painter, Martin Cregan (1832-1857). Works by Cuming are held at the Art Institute of Chicago, USA; the National Gal- lery of Ireland, Dublin; the Royal Irish Fusiliers Museum, Armagh; and the University of Edinburgh, Scotland. The sitter in this painting, William Woodburn was born in Dublin in 1735 and was a landscape painter. While little is known of his output, the Marquis of Headfort, Kells pos- sessed two large works by Wood- burn, both painted after scenes by Claude-Joseph Vernet (1714-1789). Woodburn replicated the paintings from two of four large works by Vernet held at Russborough House, Blessington.
