42 34 PAUL HENRY RHA (1877-1958) Cottages on a Hill (1910-13) Oil on canvas, 25.3 x 30.5cm (9 x 12”) Signed Paul Henry returned to Ireland in 1910 after a decade in Paris and decamped to Achill almost immediately. The present work, painted in Achill circa 1910 - 1913 is a delightful vi- gnette of a mountainside with some perilously perched cottages against a rosy sky, the type that you really only experience in the west of Ireland. Dr Brian Kennedy has written: ‘A small canvas, with quite a lot of impasto in the clouds, the foreground and in the cottages snuggling together on the hillside. There is little impasto in the blue parts of the sky, where one might expect to find it. But the sky is the real glory of the painting and, in it Henry, ‘let himself go’. This work is numbered 1354 in S.B.Kennedy’s on-going catalogue of Paul Henry’s oeuvre. € 20,000 - 30,000
