Although one cannot be certain, the pro&le of the mountains that dominate this scene are similar to those
in other Henry pictures of these years, such as
West of Ireland Cottages
c. 1926-30 (Kennedy, ongoing
cataloguing, number 1253) and
Cottages, West of Ireland
, 1928-30 (Kennedy, 2007, number 689, reproduced).
!e handling of the paint, which is relatively ‘dry’, and the brushwork suggest a date of execution of 1926-30.
!e barest hint of the direction of the overcast light that sets the mood of the painting is typical of Henry
and its brooding nature, derived from the towering mountains, illustrates the growing personal di(culties
that dominated his life in these years.
