He was a distant relative of Lord Edward FitzGerald (his mother was Lord Edward’s grand-daughter). His Land Act (1903) was a signifi- cant attempt to resolve the Irish land struggle on an equitable ba- sis. Unionist pressure forced his resignation in 1905. Rare.
